When someone is arrested or asked to attend a police interview, Elliot gives them advice over the phone before going to the police station to support them. After checking on his client’s welfare, he finds out what evidence there is, listens to their side of the story, and then decides on the most suitable approach. He’ll then be involved throughout the whole process until the case is resolved. And his first priority? Always making sure his client understands what’s happening – and that he’s there to support them. Elliot has a degree in Criminology and is accredited as a Police Station Representative.
Building trust fast
“I meet clients when they’re going through a tough time, often feeling very vulnerable. So I work hard to make them feel comfortable. I let them know that I’m independent from the police, my advice comes free of charge, that all conversations are confidential and that I’m here for them. To build their trust I’m always open and honest. Ideally, they’ll be open and honest with me too – because the more they are, the more I can help.”
Here for my clients
“No matter the charge or the situation, I start by letting clients know I’m on their side. Whether they’re innocent or admit the offence, I’m here to support them and make sure they’re treated fairly. Sometimes people just want someone to listen without judgement. That’s what I’m here for – and of course, to help them get the best possible result.”
Rising to the challenge
“It can be tough juggling literally hundreds of cases ranging from a simple theft right up to the most serious offences – and all at a different stage in the proceedings. But I make sure I give each one the same focus and attention. The thing I probably find most challenging though, is having to be the bearer of bad news and telling clients things they don’t want to hear. That can be tough but it’s important to be realistic with people as well as reassuring.”
Going the extra mile
“At Sansbury Douglas, we all go the extra mile, no matter the case. We’re always here to answer questions, follow up with the police, and make sure everything moves forward as quickly as possible. Our goal is to do what’s best for each client – not what’s best for our firm. I think that’s what sets us apart.”
